We currently restrict articles whenever we're asked to do so but this feature allows a slightly softer solution where users simply add a correction notice or legal warning which every reader then has to acknowledge before being allowed to view the article text or PDF.  Since ClipShare is only available to other publishers you can use this simple tool to correct inaccuracies or simply pass notice of legal concerns without going so far as removing the article entirely.

This means that staff at each regional title currently available on the NLA database will be able to access the archive of content for their own titles (including evening and Sundays if applicable.)  We're in the process of contacting the relevant people at each title to set this up but do get in touch directly if you're interested.

Once set up with access to their own content, each publisher has the option of subscribing to additional content from the nationals or key regionals.

1. Alerts service
   • Monitor the newspapers for mention of specific keywords or track how a story develops and unfolds over time without having to log in and run searches each morning.
   • Notification of the relevant stories will be sent direct to your inbox at 7am each morning with links direct through to the corresponding article text, article PDF image or full page image.
   • By clicking the “save” button when running a search, you can store any one search and, using the saved search page, flag it to a specific e-mail address.

2. Page turner
   • Flick through the pages of the newspaper as you would through the original hard copy.
   • No need to search for specific articles, no need to jump between PDF and website, just smooth transfer from one page to the next
   • Whenever you’re viewing a full page image through ClipShare, you’ll note navigational buttons at the bottom of the page for you to turn to the “previous”, “next”, “first” or “last” pages.

3. Legal Notes
   • We’ve built in the option for specific users to add notes to articles which will be displayed to every user accessing and article
   • This allows for the addition of corrections, legal notes or general commentary.
   • The allocation of permission for the adding or editing of notes will be down to the individual publishers.

1.  ClipShare is officially live

ClipShare was soft launched in August and has been running smoothly since.  It's now in use at all of the London national titles and we're receiving very positive feedback on its value to end users when researching and writing articles.  The PDF images of the origianl articles and pages are particularly popular.

2.  New Titles

We continue to expand the repertoire of titles available through the database adding various regionals in previous months.  A full content list is available through the documentation section of this site or on the "help" page of the ClipShare interface.

In addition to new and distinct titles, we're expanding to incorporate regional variations of existing database titles.  Initially we're focussing on Scottish content and you can now see Scottish verions of:

News International: The Times, The Sun, The Sunday Times, The News of the World

Associated: Daily Mail, Mail on Sunday

Northern & Shell: Daily Express, Sunday Express, Daily Star, Daily Star Sunday

3.  New Features

The addiitonal features mentioned elsewhere in this blog are in the final stages of testing so will be available to you soon.  Those include:

Alerts - The option to create your own alerts service which will e-mail you daily with links to all articles mentioning a keyword of your choice.

Nonetheless, since we've had feedback from a selection of users on this set-up, we are doing our best to edit the functionality and display of the interface to make it compatible and usable even in that environment.  The functional fixes are rolled out on our test server and we will move to live shortly.  Once we have those in place we can tweak the graphics etc to ensure the interface renders correctly (with no overlapping of images and fields).

From a development point of view we've had some minor struggles internally to ensure we've got all our resources pointed in the right direction but are confident now of tweaking the remaining back up and fail over initiatives that remain outstanding.  We should also be able to roll our manual spellchecking phase out which will help ensure the quality of our text output matches or exceeds the requirements of our key stakeholders.

This increase also benefits the Press Cuttings Agencies supplied through NLA eClips since the XML feeds they recieve are sourced from the same data.  This will aid them in ensuring less keyword matches are missed and they can therefore provide a higher quality service to their clients.

We're especially pleased since this leaves only minor work on monitoring and system back-up to roll out before a full live declaration.  The system remains reliable and is monitored sufficiently already to allow those organisation currently trialling it to have confidence in our ability to support their requirements.
